JAZZ BAND THE FLYING DIXIES
Formed on August 31st 1986
Jazz Band The Flying Dixies was formed on August 31st 1986 by a group of very young Dixieland Jazz enthusiastics. All of them were playing members of wood- wind and brass band "De Vliegende Hollander" (The Flying Dutchman) in Terneuzen, but wanted to play something else.
At the beginning the 14 and 15 year olds formed an unusual sight and sound in the streets, because most people did not relate tradjazz to youngsters. Because of their age and their young and fresh appearance Jazz Band The Flying Dixies were invited to introduce the phenomenon "streetparade" in former Czechoslovakia. For four years in a row they were guests of Peter Lipa at the Bratislava Jazz Days with masters of jazz like Winton Marsalis.
Through the years the band has evolved more and more into an appreciated stage-act. However, the gents have maintained loyalty to the streets and this leaves the chance to meet them when you least expect it.... And that's not a reassuring thought, is it?
This photo of Jazz Band The Flying Dixies was taken in 2000. There have been some changes since then.
